Aesculus hippocastanum Monstrosa

Aesculus hippocastanum Monstrosa

Monstrosa Horse Chestnut

Habit

A super dwarf deciduous little monster with fascinating fasciation (sorry I could not resist). The branches are extremely stunted, mildly contorted and unusually flat – this last trait as a class of plants in the trade are referred to as “crested”. The overall look is that of a very slow, small densely arranged tree forming a small irregular rounded tree. Ideal for the rock garden or small / miniature landscape.

Foliage & Bark

Foliage: The light green palmate compound leaves are small as comparted to the species but not miniature. The overall look is semi-sort of tropical and the fall color is a fair yellow. Bark: No notable bark characteristics

Flower & Fruit

Flower:
We have seen no flowers on our stock plant and due to the stunted growth I do not expect so see any in the near future, if ever. In the event they do eventually bloom then I would expect a diminutive form of the typical white terminal panicles.

Fruit:
No fruit seen, nor can I find any online or written verification of this cultivar setting fruit.
