Pinus bungeana Silver Ghost

Habit

Selected for bark character – see “Foliage & Bark” section. This is a slow to moderate growing conifer native to central and northern China. Most often the framework is low branched or possessing multiple leaders, the outline is generally upright and spreading and will form a broadly spreading dense tree. This species can also very easily be trained into a single leader to form a more formal appearance. It is tolerant of both alkaline and acidic soils and with proper sight preparation can be used in heavier soil types.

Foliage & Bark

Foliage: The dark green needles are similar to the species, displayed in 2-4” long clusters. Bark: This species is famous for its patchwork of multi-colored bark, but unfortunatley gardener have had to wait many years – in some cases 12-15 – before they start to see this attribute. ‘Silver Ghost’ is unique on two fronts, the most valuable of which is the precocious nature of the flaking bark, which starts as few as 3 years of age and progresses quickly to exhibit this decorative trait. As if that weren’t enough, the colors are a much brighter mix of hues than the species (pictured in the background). The foremost color is a silver-white with gray, patches of cinnamon brown and olive green also permeate but are not as dominant. Arguably one of the very best bark character plants available.

Flower & Fruit

Flower:
No significant ornamental flowering characteristics.

Fruit:
2” to 2.5” oblong cones are borne singly or in pairs sub terminally. Ornamental to some degree, but not particularly colorful unless brown is your preferred scheme.
