Habit

If you need a decent size shade tree you cannot beat a red oak. The upright oval structure eventually becomes broadly spreading with a rounded semi-open crown. Tolerant of acidic soils.

Foliage & Bark

Foliage: This seldom seen beauty is prized for the spring color which emerges golden-yellow and holds for some time into the late spring, eventually the color is reduced to a light green in summer. The large leaves are 9 to 10 inches long and 5 to 6 inches wide with 7 to 11 irregularly shaped and pointed lobes. The fall color is a very showy red orange. Bark: Smooth barked and slate gray.

Flower:
No significant ornamental characteristics noted.

Fruit:
Acorns with saucer shaped cups, early autumn. Usually fruit set takes many years to develop.
