Acer platanoides Paldiski
Paldiski Norway Maple
Habit
A fairly fast growing, upright deciduous tree. It is not dwarf, but considered smaller than the species. The overall outline is ovoid, with width 2/3 that of the height.
Foliage & Bark
Prized for the extraordinarily narrow lobes. Each of the 5 dark green lobes are cut almost to the midrib, seldom achieving a width over 1/2", with most in the 1/4" range. The leaf margin is a wavy, undulating affair, and attached in such a way as to be semi-pendant. Under robust growing conditions the new leaves are less narrow, but still quite unique, making for a contrast of leaf types. Fall color is golden yellow.
Flower & Fruit
Norway maple is not particularly sought after for flower. but we have noted a plentiful amount, even on young plants. Upright yellow-green corymbs in April-May, before bud break. Attracts pollinators.
