One of only two pendant forms (both in our possession) of our native Vine Maple. If left un-staked it becomes a broadly spreading low mound that is much wider than tall. The plants we sell are staked to provide a somewhat taller profile. In both cases the branches hang down from the trunk and there is no upward dominance like the species. Plants will self-layer at the top while remaining pendulous resulting in some additional height over time.
Foliage:
The new growth is reddish, which gives way to a bright green. The leaves are symmetrically shaped with 7 to 9 evenly spaced lobes of similar length.
In autumn the color is an outstanding mix of bright red, yellow and orange with hints of purple. These hues come on in stages, often developing simultaneously.
Bark:
No notable ornamental characteristics.
Flower:
The small, but notable, green-white flowers consist of 6 to 10 stalked pendant stamens which are skirted with a showy dark red sepal, the display is usually clustered in groups of 5 or more.
Fruit:
Showy wine-colored winged samaras appear in mid-autumn.
Size:
Height: 5-6’ in 10 years
Width: 6-7’ in 10 years
Based on plants staked up to achieve some height
Zone:
5 to 9
This selection was only recently introduced to the trade by us and named for my # 2 grandson. Vine Maple is well known for its tolerance of varied soils, including wet sites. It is well suited for our moist spring conditions and while tolerant of full sun it will also take partial or full shade environments.
