A brand new dwarf seedling variant from what is considered the best small stature Japanese maple in the trade - Mikawa Yatsubusa. The habit is similar to the parent with stubby branches set at odd angles making it a natural for the stylish branch pattern typical in meticulously trained Japanese maples. Slow growing and spreading, the overall look is that of a low branched, thickly arranged small tree.
Foliage:
The foliage attachment is very similar to its predecessor with leaves stacked and layered all along the primary twigs and branches. New leaves Indian red and then light copper. Once fully open they take on a consistent yellow to yellow-green & finally medium green. Since its namesake quickly becomes mostly green, or tones thereof, this new selection is prized for offering a more varied array of colors.
Bark:
The bark is green to olive green, with age it becomes darker tones of green and gray brown. Rich red to red-orange fall color.
Flower:
No notable ornamental flower characteristics.
Fruit:
Fruit set are typical bright red samaras contrasted against the green leaves, showy.
Size:
Height 3.5’ to 4.5’
Width 4.5’ to 5’
Considering the lineage, We would expect the size to be similar – growth rates on this one average 4-6” per year under cultivation. The sizes below are estimates over a 10-year period in the landscape.

While this form is being introduced by us for the first time this year (fall 2019) the original plant comes to us from our friends at Jaycee Newman Inc., in Boring OR. Our thanks go out to Jaycee and Debbie for allowing us to be the first to offer this exciting new selection.
