Cladrastis kentukea (formerly lutea) ‘Variegata’

Variegated Yellowood

Medium sized deciduous tree with upright habit making a broadly spreading rounded outline. This member of the legume family is a southeastern native and named for the yellow colored heart wood. The limb structure on mature trees is neither too dense nor too open and needs little pruning, once established the winter bones create a pleasing construct.

Foliage:
This is an exceptionally scarce selection and was thought for a time to be completely lost to the trade. The variegation is irregularly splashed and mottled with dark and light green, cream-white and soft yellow. The leaf structure is pinnately compound yielding a semi-tropical look. The 9” to 11” inch long leaf set consists of 7 to 9 rounded leaflets that give way to an outstandingly rich, clear yellow fall color.

Bark:
No significant ornamental characteristics noted.

Flower:
The 10-14” pendant panicles appear in a profuse display at the branch ends in late spring. The Wisteria-like flower is richly fragrant, predominantly white but with hints of pink. This species requires several years in the ground before bloom set is seen and it should also be noted that once flowering, they will alternate from year to year.

Fruit:
Clusters of long thin brown pods, similar to Robinia, not particularly ornamental.

Size:
Height 30’ to 45’
Width 30’ to 40’

Zone:
4 to 8

Tolerates both alkaline and acid soils, easy to establish if given average moisture.
