Ginkgo biloba ‘Fan Dancer’

Fan Dancer Ginkgo
 (Maidenhair Tree)

A new twist (not literally) to the ever-growing variegated Ginkgo line up, possessing a habit unlike any we have seen. To describe it as truly weeping is still yet to be determined, but it is most assuredly not an upright. All the plants we have grown will lean if not staked and all side branches are horizontal or stiffly pendant. The growth rate is decent but like many variegated forms it is not super-fast. Our first impression is reminiscent of an old form called ‘Horizontalis’ but a few years more will be required to see just how pendulous it might end up being.

Foliage:
The leaves have the signature deep central split, to a lesser degree the margins of each lobe are haphazardly lobed or split. The mixed colorations of bright yellow, yellow green and dark green fan out from the base to the tips of the leaf in a various widths creating a striping effect. While each leaf is wide-ranging in its pattern, we have thus far seen no inclination for it to “run home to mamma”, this trait to return to solid green is a failing with some multicolored types so based on early evaluations we can report decent stability on that aspect. The fall color is the typical rich golden yellow that is common to this Genus.
