Moderate to slow growing deciduous tree native to the southeast. The habit is similar to the species, generally upright and loosely pyramidal, however this form does seem to spread more than its parentage. Sourwood is tolerant of full sun or partial shade and is more amenable to acidic soils.
Foliage:
We are proud to be the first to offer this recently discovered form which was selected for its unique leaf. The typical species is oblong but ‘Scarlet Feathers’ is significantly longer and ultra linear with widths on most ranging from 1/8” to 3/8”, a small percentage 1/4” to 1/2”. Quite unusual and creating an very refined display. Fall color is consistent with the species with rich red with hints of orange.
Bark:
Bark character is not notable.
Flower:
Small urn shaped white flowers are born on 4-8” long slender panicles at the branch tips. Elegant and fragrant but more importantly they appear early to mid-summer when not many trees are in flower.
Fruit:
Fruit capsules hang on until fall offering an interesting contrast against the red leaves.
Size:
Height 25-30’
Width 12-15’ Wd
Still evaluating for ultimate dimensions.
Zone:
5 to 9
This plant came to us from a now nonexistent private garden here in Oregon, along with two unusual Stewartia forms. Considering there are very few cultivars in this Genus it’s a real privilege to be able to offer this selection.
