Quercus robur ‘Miki’

Miki English Oak

This one is such a rarity that we have only our own evaluations and a few bits of information from Poland to guide us as to the ultimate structure. Compared to other oaks we are familiar with this is a small to medium size stature tree. It appears to be generally upright with semi-open and more delicately arranged branching. The crown is initially an oblong shaped outline that gives way to a more rounded crown with age. Oaks being oaks, this smaller growing form, along with its unique foliage, make it a real prize for any landscape that would require a tree that won’t overpower.

Foliage:
There are a few “cut-leaf” forms within this genus but “Miki” should be considered daintier by comparison. The shiny bright green leaves are irregularly incised all along the leaf blade and in many cases curved under with twists and turns to add ornamental interest. The size, shape and distribution of the leaves provide filtered rather than full shade and the fall color is mostly a combination of copper brown, yellow orange to burnt orange.

Bark:
Darker gray to almost black, ridged and furrowed with age.

Flower:
No significant ornamental characteristics noted.

Fruit:
Acorns in early autumn.

Size:
Height 14’-17’ - In 10 yr
Width 9’-13’    - In 10 yr
The sizes listed below are based on observations of 6 year old plants here at the nursery, evaluations for ultimate size are still ongoing.
